While steel beams are necessary and important in a variety of structures, including residential and commercial buildings and bridges, you may not realize that there are many different types of steel beams. Any load-bearing structural element covering a surface can be classified as a "steel beam", and herein lies the confusion.

However, each type of trunk offers unique properties that serve a specific purpose, so they are more commonly used in different roles.

To clear up some of the confusion, let's take a closer look at the types of steel beams available and their main purpose.

W Beams

W steel beams are so named because they have wide flanges (hence the acronym “W”). They can be manufactured in H-beam or I-beam format. (H or I, because they're alphabetical, are barred if you look at them from the front). They are typically used in residential construction where weight saving is important and are best used glued, bolted, or welded.

I beam

As mentioned earlier, the I-bar is so named because it resembles the letter I when viewed directly in the forward position. They can have tapered flanges or wide flanges. They are often used in industrial applications where they have a turnkey power supply.

 H Beams

Like I-rays, H-rays are so named because they look like a capital "H" when viewed from the front. They have long flanges and are usually longer and heavier than I-beams. Typically used in larger structures such as skyscrapers or bridges, they offer greater strength over a larger area.

C or channel beam

C or Channel Beams have a C-shaped cross-section. They contain a beveled internal flange face that appears on only one side of the beam. Channel beams are usually used as beams for lighter loads. Therefore, they are preferred in residential construction than in heavy construction.

As you can see, there is a wide variety of steel beams for different tasks and it is therefore important to know which type of beam is suitable for the task. If you are unsure, you can always ask your local manufacturer who will be happy to help you find the right carrier for the task.
