Encountering a gigantic Silverback gorilla & family in their natural home was an astounding & humbling experience in itself. With less than one thousand gorillas left in the planet, the honor of that experience isn't lost on us.

Planning our Rwanda gorilla trekking took a bit of legwork but you can check online as there are so many companies like Volcanoes Safaris from where you can info about Rwanda tours.

What is the best time to see the mountain gorillas?

Though gorilla trekking in Rwanda can be enjoyed all through the year, but it tends to be at its best during the drier months. Dry season happens to be from December to February and June to September but the temperature itself doesn't differ much throughout the year.

Permit requirements & costs:

Both Uganda and Rwanda needs tourists to get a permit to trek mountain gorillas. Presently, for Rwanda, a permit will cost $750 for outsiders. The number of gorilla trekking permits, provided per day are limited. Only eight people are permitted to witness each gorilla group. Keep in mind, during the peak season, gorilla permits should be booked in advance because of the high demand of tourists.

Renting a porter:

Once you're driven to the starting point of gorilla trekking, you'll discover a unit of porters waiting for trekkers. Their duty is to transport your luggage and also offer you a helping hand whenever you face challenges on the hike.

We hired one, even though we had a few small bags. The fee to rent a porter is $10, obviously, you can tip the porter if you like their work. Renting a porter for such a negligible fee in comparison to the actual permit at least offers local people with much-required employment.
